Ghost Hunting with EVP

EVP, or Electronic Voice Phenomenon, refers to the recording of sounds and voices onto a medium. Most commonly used currently are digital voice recorders or digital video recorders. Captured EVP is said to be the recordings of voices of spirits trying to communicate with us. Skeptics say EVP is just radio interference or tricks played by our mind.

Recording EVP is really very simple. Turn your recorder on and start talking. When asking questions, it is a good idea to pause between them. This allows time to capture responses. The review process of clarifying the sounds you hear and debunking is more complicated. Software is available to help with this process. We have included a free site at the end of this blog.

digital recorders and electronic Voice Phenomenon

There are differences of opinion in the paranormal community as to the best type of digital voice recorder to use. Some researchers believe by purchasing the a more expensive recorder, your chances of hearing an EVP increase. With the higher quality models you can filter out background noise, hiss and static that is often captured. But there are others who feel just the opposite. That the lesser expensive models are the way to go. By not eliminating the background noise you have a better chance at spirit communication. Entities can manipulate the background static to create the EVP itself. We believe having a recorder you feel comfortable using and are familiar with is the best choice when investigating as that way you can eliminate or confirm familiar sounds.

*Although smart phones can be used, they can also emit their own frequency interference causing a false EVP.

Classes of an EVP

Most ghost hunters/paranormal investigators like EVP evidence because it’s recorded, can be debated, run through filters, slowed down and listened too by believers and skeptics alike. That being said, it’s important to go over the different classifications of an EVP.
CLASS A: Can hear clearly on the recording. Clear response. What investigators are looking for.
CLASS B: The most common, less clear, an amplifier can help hear voices more clearly.
Class C: Lowest in volume, whispers or voices that are hard to understand.
CLASS D: Largely dismissed as user error. Can be left out of an investigation evidence.

 Historical context of evp

E.V.P. experimentation is said to date back to the 1920s. It wasn’t until the 1960s that the first E.V.P. was recorded. E.V.P. found its place among paranormal hobbyists in the 1970s. The popularity of EVP in the paranormal world is generally attributed to two men, stemming from two separate traditions, psychic and professor. Psychic Atilla Von Szalay looked into auditory technologies because spirit photography had failed. Dr. Konstantin Raudive, professor, philosopher, parapsychologist and student of Carl Jung planned to stun the academic, spiritual, and scientific communities with empirical evidence of human communication with the dead.

evp audio editing software

Full Audacity Program for all computer types

There are many audio editing options when it comes to finding evidence of an EVP. Audacity is a free downloadable software that allows the user to be able to listen and edit out background noise. The audio editing tools are the highlight of this software. Audacity is considered to be pretty user friendly and can be used by both beginners or professionals. There is however an audacity disk that can be used across multiple devices with full features that may be useful in your EVP identification journey.
